As I sat on my management call today, a thought popped into my head… Working from home is basically the professional version of a mullet. 😂 Business in the front. Party in the back. Or in our case…business on top, sweatpants on the bottom. 👩🏽‍💻😂 But here’s the thing - being comfortable doesn’t mean you’re any less professional. The clients are taken care of, the projects move forward, and great work still gets DONE. 👏 And be honest…are you wearing real pants on your Zoom calls? 😂👇

Today I had the opportunity to sit down with Shawn Duffy of Duffy Compliance, and this was one of those conversations that every small business owner needs to hear. We talked about something that may not always be the most exciting part of running a business - cybersecurity, compliance, and protecting what you’ve worked so hard to build. And as Shawn shared, you don’t have to be a huge company with a huge IT department to start doing the right things. We covered practical ways small businesses can strengthen their security, the mistakes business owners may not realize they’re making, why compliance matters, and how being proactive now can save you a LOT of headaches later. One of the things I love about Mind Your Business with SML is getting to have real conversations with people who know their stuff and can break it down in a way that actually makes sense for small business owners. If you host enough virtual events, eventually something is going to go wrong. A speaker loses internet. Someone can’t unmute. The slides decide they’re no longer participating. Or…someone hacks into your event and starts sharing VERY adult content. 😳 Yep. That happened to me recently. And while it was definitely NOT in the event playbook, it turned into a pretty great lesson about what it really takes to host a virtual event when things go sideways. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s being prepared enough that when something does go wrong, you can handle it, keep your audience comfortable, and move right along. 🎥 🎥 Check out the video for the full story.
